Service Description

Dementia Informed – Learning Outcomes Living Well & Rights-Based Care • People with dementia and carers can live well with meaningful quality of life. • Care must be rights-based, person-centred, and shaped by individual priorities. • Carers have legal rights and must be supported and consulted. • Staff interactions should respect dignity, identity, and strengths. • Residents should be supported to continue life roles and explore new opportunities. Communication & Inclusion • Recognise common difficulties: memory, confusion, communication, perception, sensory changes. • Use clear language, eye contact, visual cues, and validation techniques. • Apply tools: memory books, communication cards, technology aids, music, art. • Diversity matters: culture, ethnicity, LGBTQ+, younger diagnosis, learning difficulties. • Technology can enhance independence and wellbeing. Safety & Environment • Understand physical, social, and environmental risks. • Protect residents while enabling choice and independence. • Adjust environments: clear signage, familiar objects, quiet spaces, sensory zones. • Living well means belonging, purpose, and joy—not just safety. Behaviour, Mood & Stigma • Comorbidities (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression) affect care needs. • Behaviour is expressive, not “challenging”—it signals unmet needs. • Respond sensitively to distress with supportive communication. • Challenge stigma: use inclusive language, involve residents in decisions, highlight strengths. Safeguarding & Risk Enablement • People with dementia are at increased risk of neglect, harm, and abuse. • Staff must know and apply adult protection protocols (ASP Act 2007). • Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility—report concerns promptly. • Risk enablement balances safety with dignity, choice, and control. Key Message: Dementia-informed practice means respecting rights, enabling independence, adapting environments, and safeguarding wellbeing. Every interaction is an opportunity to affirm dignity and inclusion.
