Interim Registered
Manager
When things arent working out......we are here for you.
When a service loses its manager, the clock starts immediately — on regulatory compliance, on staff confidence, and on the quality of care people receive.
Mac Research and Consultancy provides experienced interim managers who step into that gap and hold the service steady while a permanent appointment is made.
THE SITUATION
-
Sudden resignation, suspension, or long-term absence of the registered manager
-
Enforcement action — a Care Inspectorate Improvement Notice, or CQC Warning Notice, conditions, or a Section 31
-
Grades of 1–2, or a rating of Requires Improvement or Inadequate, where the improvement plan needs someone accountable on site
-
Post-acquisition stabilisation, TUPE transition, or a service opening ahead of a substantive appointment
-
A capable deputy who needs mentoring into the role rather than replacing

OWNERSHIP

REPORTING AND GOVERNANCE

REGISTRATION - THE HONEST POSITION
Where there is an improvement notice or action plan in place, the interim manager owns delivery of it and evidences progress in a format the regulator will accept.
Weekly written report to the provider covering compliance position, risk, staffing, occupancy, and improvement plan progress. Monthly governance summary suitable for board or owner review. A structured handover pack and exit report at the end of the placement, so the incoming permanent manager inherits a documented position rather than a verbal briefing.
Interim placement and formal registration are not the same thing, and we are direct with clients about this. In England, becoming the CQC registered manager requires an application in the individual's own name with an interview and fit-and-proper-person checks, which takes time; many placements therefore run as an interim or acting manager with the Nominated Individual carrying registered accountability, and we will tell you which route your circumstances actually require. In Scotland, changes of manager must be notified to the Care Inspectorate, and the manager must hold or be working toward the required qualification and SSSC registration for the service type. We plan the regulatory position with you at the outset rather than discovering it mid-placement.

PRACTICALITIES
Placements are typically three to six months, full-time on site, with part-time and hybrid models available for smaller services or where the need is oversight rather than day-to-day cover. Charged at a day rate or monthly retainer, with a defined minimum term, notice period, and agreed exit criteria. We can run parallel recruitment support for the substantive post, or develop an existing deputy toward it, so the placement ends on a plan rather than a cliff edge.

WHY CHOOSE US?
Our interim managers work with the whole consultancy behind them — audit suites, policy frameworks, clinical governance review, mock inspection, and improvement planning — so the service gets more than one person's capacity. We operate across both the Scottish and English regulatory systems, and all consultants hold current PVG or DBS clearance.
